"Demonstrate basic competency with design and
implementation within a variety of online learning environments"
For this evidence I selected my lesson critique. I believe that looking at my lesson critique is a good piece of evidence for this outcome because too often we have a lesson that works okay so we continue to use it but
never really try to improve it. Going through VIU for my bachelor of education degree I had the privilege of working with teachers, professors and supervisors who constantly asked the question “if you taught this lesson again, what would you do differently next time?” and I am very glad that they did. This made me constantly reflect on my teaching practices and I believe I am a better teacher because of it. With this assignment it allowed me to look at how I would take lessons that I have taught in a face-to-face classroom and think about how they might look online.
With this lesson critique I was able to look at technology and think about how I would be able to use it more. In my original lesson, students worked in groups and talked about their ideas and I always thought that it would be cool to collaborate with other students in other classrooms but I did not see how it could possibly work. Now with the advantage of Blackboard Collaborate I am excited to see how this lesson (and unit) will transform once I have enough students to work with. This is just more proof that teaching styles are constantly evolving (at least mine is) with the added knowledge that this course and program offers me.
The learning outcome for this evidence is: demonstrate basic competency with design and implementation within a variety of online learning environments and tools. I believe that as teachers we owe it to our students to use a variety of learning environments and tools. IF we just used the same tools and kept our students in the same environments every day and for the entire year then we may be only teaching to a select few students and not our entire class. This comes back to personalization of learning. Not every student learns the same way and everyone has a different learning style so if we as teachers can remember that and apply that knowledge to our teaching, I believe that we would see students taking ownership and pride in their learning which would lead to higher success
rates.

"Develop skills to optimize learning experiences through
personalization"
For this artifact I have chosen my Quality Review reflection that we completed in week four of the OLTD 502 course. This assignment was meant to have us think about and evaluate our teaching presence, social presence
and cognitive presence in our classes and how we create them. With using guiding questions we were asked to evaluate and reflect on our teaching practices. Although I believe that I have completed this to the best of my
ability, I know that my answers will continue to change and take shape as I move through this program and as I get deeper into teaching DL.
I learned through completing this assignment that I still have a long way to go with my teaching style and how it will take form. Being a recent graduate and having been hired in a DL school after completing my degree and no real background to the DL world through my courses I felt a little like I was constantly trying to tread water to keep on top of everything because it was all so new. I have been fortunate with this course that I am able to apply what
I have learned to my classroom and share with my colleagues and with doing this assignment I have been able to grow more by taking a look and thinking about my teaching practices and how I might be able to improve.
This learning outcome is: develop skills to optimize learning experiences through personalization. It is becoming more and more evident that learning should be making a push to become more personalized. In a classroom with 30 students I know that it is hard to personalize the learning for everyone but that is also where inquiry can come into play and benefit everyone. As teachers we must be constantly updating our way of thinking and attempting to try new things and push not only our students but ourselves to new levels. Too often you see teachers with skills that they have had for ten or more years and those skills just do not apply in today’s classroom. I believe it was John Dewey who stated: “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.”
