"Understand, design and commit to student success in online learning environments"
-and-
"Undertake engagement with environments through online facilitation for effective learning"
I have decided to use the implementation of my Canvas courses
for these two pieces of evidence. This year is the first year that I allowed my
students to complete some of their courses (up to 75% of some courses and 0% of
other courses) online. As of next year, all my grade 8 and 9 students will have
the option to complete all courses at 100% online if they wish through the use
of Canvas, eTextbooks and a few other tools.
When creating the Canvas courses and testing them with my students this year, I found that it helped keep them on track more than in previous years. If I look at all of my grade 9 students, the ones that are on or ahead of schedule are those who are using the Canvas classroom for all assignments and tests that are possible. I think the fact that Canvas gives notifications and reminders about due dates really helps the students to keep focused on what needs to be done and in a DL setting, that is huge. I am very excited to see what happens when 100% availability is an option next year. Through this early (not 100% implementation) I was able to get feedback to make next year better than this year, which is something that I will always strive for – making each year better than the last.
Understanding, designing, and committing to student success in online learning environments is a huge part of teaching in the DL world. Giving students options is always a good idea. You never know the strengths of a student until they are allowed to show you in their own way.
Undertaking engagement with environments through online facilitation for effective learning is again an option for students. Allowing them to choose how they learn will give much more engaged students. If I had the choice between writing out a worksheet or completing an assignment online, I would choose the online version in a heartbeat and so if I feel that way, I need to allow my students the same opportunity.

"Engage in service learning"
For this piece of my ePortfolio, I have chosen some evidence
that is not quite complete yet. I have chosen to put my thesis here. My thesis
will be included with this reflection once it is completed.
What did I learn? To come...
Engage in service learning is something that I believe all teachers should do throughout their careers. We should be helping other teachers and share the knowledge that we learn so everyone can move into the 21st century as much as possible with their teaching. If we can give teachers knowledge about what is new and that it is exciting and not scary, I think it will be embraced more and feared less.
