"Select strategies and resources appropriate for environment, learners and learning outcomes"
In OLTD 507, we were asked to look
at 15 different tools and review them and their helpfulness for teachers and
students. I also created a form so that other teachers who come across tools
that I have not listed can take the same critical approach to finding out more
information about it.
With these 15, I made sure that I examined a variety of tools that were used for all different reasons – collaboration, organization, presentation, engagement and instruction. Some of these tools were something that I don’t think that I would give a second chance to and others are ones that I have already implemented in my teaching practice. I consolidated this list to the top 3 tools that benefited the teachers and a top 3 list of tools that benefited the students and I have shared this knowledge with my colleagues. I am excited that I had the opportunity to look closer at these tools because I have been meaning to for a while but have not found the time but now I was forced to find the time to and select the ones that will be the most beneficial moving forward.
“Select strategies and resources appropriate for environment, learners and learning outcomes”. With this learning outcome, I believe that the most important word is appropriate. We need to constantly be making sure that the tools we are using and suggesting to our students will be ones that work and that are appropriate for their learning. If we are setting our students up with a tool that is too hard to understand the uses of, we are just setting them up to fail because they are spending too much time figuring out the how to use that they cannot focus on the how I can show my learning.

" Incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles"
For this learning outcome, I have chosen my UDL project that I
created in OLTD 507. For this project, I created a group of three assignments
(in Canvas) for my Foods 9 course. These assignments incorporated Pinterest,
TED-Ed, Google Docs, discussion forums and other tools.
While I was creating these assignments, I was able to incorporate some tools that I had not been able to use before because I didn’t know enough about them. When I created my tool analysis, I learned about some of the tools that I didn’t know enough about and was able to incorporate them. With these assignments, my students have access to a “flipped” lesson where they watch a TED-Ed video and then do some discussions about it. They also have a Project Based Learning component where they are experimenting with different ways to bake the same batch of cookies and looking at a food topic of their choice and displaying their understanding and learning in their own way. I am very excited to see what happens when my students complete this group of assignments.
"Incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles". If we as teachers do not allow our students to learn the way they best learn and show their learning the way they know best, we are doing them a disservice. Just as we as teachers are given the ability to teach how we want, our students should be given the opportunity to learn how they want. Giving them multiple opportunities and choice when it comes to assignments will allow them to explore learning their own way and come up with their own conclusions. From personal experience using PBL in the brick and mortar classrooms, you would be shocked to see how much great learning can be presented when we allow our students to do it their own way.
