"Engage in building learning communities and communities of practice"
For this evidence I have chosen my closing project for OLTD 503 – a power point presentation outlining my philosophy of online communication. Communication is a big factor in everything we do from everyday conversations to creating deep and meaningful learning for not only our students but also ourselves as teachers. This power point outlines how I believe teachers can effectively communicate and engage their students and how students can also communicate with their peers.
Before doing this power point I started with writing a paper on what I thought were the most effective ways to communicate with my students. I wrote this paper before completing my OLTD 503 course and then the power point was put together after completing the course. It was good for me to revisit my beliefs and see how they have changed in the 6 short weeks of the course. This also showed me how much was added to my philosophy in the 6 weeks and opened my eyes to how much it will change in the years to come and over my teaching career. I chose to do this assignment as a power point presentation instead of a paper as I believe that the diagrams help to show what I am trying to convey and it speaks to my learning style of adding images to words so that it is not as bland.
Learning communities in my opinion are a huge part of student learning and success. After having a lot of experience with the ‘community of learners’ and inquiry approach to learning I see the greatness of student work that would not be present without the same opportunities. In the 503 course I feel like we had a chance to really get to know each other and try out different styles of learning and through this trial and error as it were with my peers I feel more connected and willing to share than I did before and I think that all students should be able to experience this feeling. This is what I strive for in my online classrooms and with my students and I will continue to do so through my whole teaching career.

"Share engagement strategies and tips"
Information overload is something that can occur very quickly with all the technology tools and resources that are available to the world today. In OLTD 503 some of our peers had us explore the web and watch videos about the
potential of information overload and the pros as well of the cons of too much information. This paper that I wrote outlined the key points that I took away from watching the videos and the new thoughts and perspectives that I have in regards to this issue.
Before writing this paper I thought that when I had too much technology thrown at me, I would shut down and stop processing it. Through watching the videos and reading about information overload it is easy to see now that it is not so much the overload but how we process the information and take what we need from it. Sometimes when we think that we have too much information thrown at us and it is overwhelming it is actually just our need to determine what we think is usable and apply it without keeping all the useless information. This all plays into the strategies we can use when processing information as well as passing along the same strategies and tips to our
students for their success.
Student engagement is big with their learning. If we can give our students strategies and tips on how to best process the information they are given in a way that is meaningful to them, we are then setting up our students
for success and allowing them to explore their learning on a deeper and more meaningful level to them. I am looking forward to gaining many strategies throughout the remainder of this program and being able to share with my future students and colleagues.
